Hanwha Defense USA secured a $269 million contract from TOTE Services to build one Medium Landing Ship for the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps. The agreement includes options for three additional vessels. This marks Hanwha's first U.S. naval shipbuilding order since acquiring Philadelphia's Philly Shipyard in December 2024.
The 2,687-ton, 100-meter ship will support military operations in contested waters, including the Indo-Pacific region. Construction at Hanwha Philly Shipyard begins in the fourth quarter of 2027, with delivery expected in 2030. Hanwha won the contract through a competitive bidding process launched in July, selected based on competitive pricing and acceptance of program subcontract terms.
TOTE Services holds a $2.2 billion contract to oversee construction of up to eight vessels for the Navy and Marine Corps' planned 35-ship LSM fleet. The program aims to expand U.S. naval shipbuilding capacity and accelerate deliveries across multiple domestic shipyards. Philly Shipyard has previously delivered four National Security Multi-Mission Vessels under TOTE Services' construction management model.
Hanwha acquired Philly Shipyard in December 2024 and has invested in workforce development and production technology to prepare for military contracts. The company is also pursuing a controlling stake in the facility. TOTE Services continues discussions with Bollinger Shipyards and Fincantieri Marinette Marine about their participation in the landing ship program.
