Every technology boom comes with a chorus of inevitability. The internet will replace retail. Mobile will replace computers. Cryptocurrency will replace traditional finance. Each wave arrives with breathless certainty that resistance is futile, adaptation is mandatory, and skeptics are simply behind the times.
We're hearing this song again with artificial intelligence, particularly in recent weeks as market movements have been framed around the "certainty" of AI's transformative power. This trend is being sold as inevitable. It deserves more skepticism than it is getting.
The problem with inevitability narratives is that they short-circuit actual thinking. When something is inevitable, you stop asking harder questions. You stop examining costs, tradeoffs, and who benefits versus who loses. You stop considering whether the promised transformation actually materializes as advertised. You simply adapt and hope you're on the right side of change.
History suggests we should be more careful. Not because technological change isn't real, but because the specific shape that change takes is far less predetermined than the inevitable-narrative merchants suggest.
Consider what we've learned from previous "unstoppable" technological shifts. Automation was supposed to eliminate jobs wholesale. It did transform labor markets, but in ways that surprised economists and policymakers. Globalization was supposed to create universal prosperity. It generated genuine wealth but also concentrated gains, destabilized communities, and created entirely new political fractures. Social media was supposed to democratize information. It did and it didn't, depending on where you sit.
The issue isn't that these technologies were overstated in their power. It's that we treated outcomes as predetermined when they actually depended on choices we made along the way. Policy choices. Corporate governance choices. Individual business model choices. Regulatory choices.
With AI, we're being told that certain outcomes are simply going to happen, so we'd better get ready. Certain jobs will disappear. Certain industries will be disrupted. Certain companies will dominate. The subtext is always: your role is to adapt, not to influence the terms of that adaptation.
But this underestimates human agency in shaping technological futures. It also conveniently removes pressure from the people building these systems to consider whether their preferred outcome actually serves the broader public interest.
Consider the knowledge gaps we're operating under. We don't have reliable data on how AI systems perform across different populations. We don't fully understand the training dynamics that shape these models or the labor conditions upstream in their creation. We're still learning what misinformation and manipulation look like in an AI-augmented information environment. We're uncertain about concentration of power as these tools require enormous capital to develop.
None of these uncertainties are reasons to halt development. But they are very good reasons to question the "this is all inevitable" framing.
When something is treated as inevitable, regulatory conversations shift. Instead of "How should we shape this technology to serve our values?" the conversation becomes "How do we adjust our systems to accept what's coming?" That's a meaningful difference in who holds power and whose interests get prioritized.
The genuinely innovative thing we could do right now isn't surrendering to inevitability. It's asking harder questions about what we actually want from AI development, which outcomes we'd like to avoid, and which choices we retain. Those conversations are harder than simply adapting to the inevitable. But they matter more.
Real technological wisdom isn't about prediction or surrender. It's about recognizing that futures are made, not found.
